My work is produced with small, medium and large 4x5” analogue
cameras, all with focus,
aperture and shutter speed set manually. While I enjoy the larger
formats, the candid subject matter of “humanity on the go” is
spontaneous and small format cameras have an immediacy to them
that larger cameras cannot approach.
I prefer using lenses ranging between 28mm and 70mm to maintain
an intimate connection with my subjects, but also use others
depending on the subject matter and equipment. I use a Sekonic
L-508 light meter. A large variety of transparency films are
used, each of which is selected depending on light conditions,
altitude, temperature and subject matter.
The vast majority of the photographs are made with the camera
being hand-held. I use a Gitzo tripod for stability, though
tripods are very seldom used -and usually only for architecture,
active situations or intimate, low-light conditions – and
of course, the larger format cameras. Equally rare
is the usage of flash or other artificial lighting as I find
ambient light utterly beautiful and sensual.
